The Hebrew Midwives
The Hebrew Midwives.
The word of Pharaoh was Law & he “spake” unto the Hebrew Midwives, — now a policy is introduced that, through the death of the male seed, would ultimately lead to the demise of the holy nation & victory for the serpent power.
But just as when Noah entered the ark to keep seed alive — so God had raised up two faithful Hebrew Midwives to “keep seed alive” in Israel.
Why are only two mentioned? — were these just the “chief midwives” — some think they were Egyptians,
But they have Hebrew names & were placed over the Hebrew women & thus termed “Hebrew midwives” — how could they be expected to kill Hebrew children? — if they were Egyptians why would they be described as “faithful & God-fearing” & why would Egyptians be Midwives to the Hebrews.
We don’t know the name of Pharaoh but the names of these two faithful midwives are recorded. — their names are Hebrew names,
Thus they were Hebrews, ones who had “crossed over” — just as we are spiritual Hebrews, ones who have crossed over to serve God.
There are a number of interesting features recorded concerning the Midwives & their work, — here we have a little cameo of the work of the faithful ecclesia in Egypt — these Midwives manifested light & life in the midst of darkness & death. — so must the Ecclesia of God.
1] Names are recorded.
Exo 1:15 And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:
Shiphrah = brightness. — Rt shaphar to glisten. ISBD = “fairness” or “beauty”
Puah =Â brilliancy, splendid.
So their names speak of light & their work was to preserve life.
The Lord Jesus Christ was also “light & life”
He was the “light of the world” [ John 8:12]
He is “The way, the truth & the life” [John 14:6]
Their names then speak to us of those who manifest the glory of God, — they manifested light & not the darkness of Egypt. —- they preserved the life of those under sentence of death.
We have been called B&S to the work of the Hebrew Midwives to manifest the light of the glory of God, — we have to cast off the works of darkness & put on the armour of light.
That was the challenged to Job.
Job 40:10 Deck thyself now with majesty and excellency;, and array thyself with glory and beauty.
The garments of Aaron & his sons were for Glory & beauty Exo 28:2 .Exo 28:40
So the names of the midwives speak of the divine attribute of brightness, glory, & beauty — they were lights in Egyptian darkness & we are called to manifest the light of the Truth.
Phil 2:15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world.
2] We notice they feared God, & they refused the Kings command:
Exo 1:17 But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.
They were faithful & “feared God” — the time of the promise had come, if all male children were slain how could Israel survive & be delivered?
But they were not the only ones who “feared God — Moses parents “were not afraid of the kings commandment”
Heb 11:23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.
These midwives were God-fearing & refused to keep the commands of King sin,
Solomon conclusion was that the whole man was one who “feared God & kept his commandments.
Eccle 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole [ duty ] of man.
The Hebrew midwives feared God & kept his commands & refused the King commandment.
They are we believe typical of the faithful Ecclesia of God.
3] The work of the Midwives was to bring new life into the world.
Thus they are typical of the ecclesia of God that holds forth & teaches the word of Life to those who ask of the hope within them, — So saving the life of those who under the law of King sin are subject to death.
The Heb for Midwife  is “yalad” H3205, it means “to bear young”
So we read they “saved the men children alive”
Hebrew women were not as the Egyptians they were “lively”
Exo 1:19 The Hebrew women were “lively” = “chayeh” [ only time this word is used] = vigorous RT chayah = to live
ROTHÂ “full of life”
So the ecclesia, the bride of Christ is “full of life” —- it comprises those who in Baptism have risen to a new life in Christ.
Rom 6:4 ” in newness of life”
Notice it was the SONS that were to be targeted, — not the daughters. —- So the type was fulfilled in Christ day when
Mat 2:13 Herod sought the young child to destroy him.
AS in the time of Moses it was all the male children that were to die.
Mat 2:16 “slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under,”
A better translation Is
YLT, Roth, ERV & many other say “he slew all the male children”
Once more we see the continual warfare, — The conflict of Gen 3:15 between the “seed of woman” & “the seed of the serpent” — Firstly as Pharaoh & then Herod sought to destroy the promised seed.
4] God made them houses
Exo 1:21 And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.
God didn’t build them a house to live in, — The sense of the word house used here & in other places is of building “families” — The midwives were to be blessed with children & their family was to increases in Israel. — The blessing of the Midwives is very similar to the promise to David that God would build him a house, — that his posterity would sit upon the throne of Israel.
2 Sam 7:11 Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house. [ 27 ]
Therefore their posterity was to continue & increase, — once again we see a type of the faithful ecclesia of God, — The house of the living God, the pillar & ground of the truth..
So these two faithful, God-fearing midwives are typical of the faithful of all ages, Jews & Gentiles in the Ecclesia of God, who though living in the world of Egyptian darkness, have manifested light & brought new life to those under sentence of death. — they have preserved life in a world of sin & death.
Their names spoke of light, they feared God & kept his commandments, not the commands of Pharaoh, — saved the life of the seed of Israel, they ministered to the Hebrew women who were full of life, & God made them houses.
Do we manifest light, Do we fear God & keep his commandments, do we hold forth the word of life & nourish those who are “full of life”
God has made us a house in the ecclesia of God, — Let us look to the example of the Hebrew Midwives.
So even before we consider Moses & his parents we see there was a faithful witness in Israel.
From among that faithful ecclesia God choose Amram & Jochebed to bring forth a son who would deliver his people.
