Warnings from Israel’s history.
1 Cor 10.
The warnings from Israel??s history.
Paul brings to our attention the warnings from Israel failure in the wilderness.
Notice the emphasis on the word ALL ?5x
All our fathers were under the Cloud
All passed through the Sea
All Baptised into Moses in the cloud & in the Sea
All eat of the same spiritual meat
All drink of same spiritual drink
They were Baptised, fed upon the Manna & given water to drink.
So the Corinthians had likewise been Baptised into the greater than Moses, they had received the Manna from heaven, the True bread The Lord Jesus Christ, & they had been provided with the living water from the Christ rock
But Paul warns them.
1Co 10:5 ?But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
Will we be overthrown in wilderness?
These are our examples too.
Co 10:6 ?Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.
Examples = “Tupos” [14 x in NT.] = from a root that means “To thump” = as a die or stamp, picture of the exact image being left by a stamp.
Notice Paul repeats the warning
1 Co 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
Paul was writing to Corinth, “the ends of the world, [Aion]” was the end of the Mosaic world that was made desolate by the Roman armies in AD 70.
But we stand in the same hope, surrounded by the same corrupting influences, — so let us heed Pauls warnings to Corinth.
Apostle Paul selects Five incidents from the Wilderness journey to warn of the dangers we face.
1] 1 Co 10:6 ?”they also lusted” — after things of Egypt — looked back to old way of life.
2] 1 Co 10:7 ?”Neither be ye idolaters” — Golden calf. — false idolatrous worship.
3] 1 Co 10:8 ?” Neither let us commit fornication“– daughters of Moab, — sexual immorality
4] 1 Co 10:9 ?” Neither let us temp Christ” –? Manna, — loathed light bread.
5] 1 Co 10:10 Neither murmur ye” — Spies evil report.
Warning against Lusting
Paul warns of the danger of lusting after the things of Egypt, things we have left behind in Christ.
Word Lusted = “set the heart upon”, to long for, to desire,
Israel said “Who shall give us flesh to eat?”
Num 11:5 We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick: —
The 6 things of Egypt, —- apart from the fish they all grow in the ground,
This contrasts with the 7 fruits of the land,
Deu 8:8 land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey [ Hos 2:8-9 ?] All fruits that grow above the ground.
Corinth appealed to the Lusts of the Flesh, to the things of the Earth, — they had come out from the society of Corinth, but had Corinth come out of them, —- we have come out of the world but has the world come out of us?. — danger of lusting after the things of Egypt those things we have left behind.
Warning against Idolatry
Paul warns against the Idolatry that was surrounded them.
1Co 10:7 ?Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
Paul is referring to the sexual immorality practiced in Corinth.
Paul is quoting the words of:-
Exo 32:6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.
Were the Corinthians attending Idol festivities because in reality they loved the licentious worship associated with them?
So Paul warns them.
1Co 8:10 For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol’s temple,
When Moses came down from the mount he found Israel engaged in the idolatrous worship of the “Golden calf”, — no doubt this was modelled on the worship of “Apis”, the Bull of Egypt
When our Lord returns, comes down in like manner, how will he find us? — will we be watching, or will we be engaged in the idolatrous affairs of this life, —- ?Remember Paul taught that “covetousness is idolatry”, —- the danger of our age.
Warning against Fornication.
1Co 10:8 ?Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.
Based on Israel??s whoredom with the daughters of Moab.
Num 25:1 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab
Num 25:3 ?And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.
EXH for us to be a Holy & a separate people, the loose morals of the world mustn’t affect our walk in the Truth. — avoid the counsel of Balaam.
Warning against tempting Christ
1Co 10:9 Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.
Israel tempted God when they spake against God. — loathed Yahweh??s provision of the “manna” ,
Num 21:5 ?And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.
Num 21:6 ?And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
Manna was in Deu 8:3 ?Deu 8:16 ?given to teach “that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live” .
“that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end”;
WE have the “True Bread”, it is by every word that proceeds out of Gods mouth that we shall live, —- If we reject & despise the True Bread, if our soul loatheth the true Bread like those in Israel we shall die.
Final Warning was against Murmuring
1 Co 10:10 ?Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.
Murmuring Related to Evil report of the Spies. — Israel heard the report & wanted to turn back.
Num 14:36 ?And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land,
The Spies died by plague
Num 14:37 Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the LORD.
But not only did the spies die, as a result of murmuring Israel were condemned to wander for 40 years, — that generation would die in the wilderness & never see the land, — they were all destroyed of the destroyer.
So Pauls warning is in
1Co 10:12 ?Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
Let us heed Paul’s warning to Corinth, —- we live in the same environment of service to Mammon, Enjoyment Sport & Pleasure & Licentiousness.
We must remain a Holy people, with our minds set upon the Kingdom, not on the pleasures of this life.
As the Athlete strives for the temporary glory of a corruptible crown, we must strive for the glory of the incorruptible crown of righteousness,
We must strive for Holiness, we cannot serve God & this world.
